The Importance of Diet

It is important to feed your pet according to their size, activity level and stage of life.

High quality diets should contain:

Puppies

Puppies require increased amounts of energy to grow, however there is a big difference between small breeds and large breeds. Small breed dogs grow quickly, reaching maturity in approximately 8-10 months.  Large breed dogs take much longer to reach adulthood - taking approximately 18 - 24 months before they are fully grown.

Large breed puppies require a moderate energy supply for steady, controlled growth. Growing too quickly can cause serious muscular and skeletal problems in large breed dogs such as abnormal joint cartilage and hip dysplasia - these are serious conditions which can cause your pet years of discomfort. To prevent such problems it is important to feed Large Breed Puppy food to large breed puppies.

Seniors

Senior or mature diets generally have less fat, but maintain good quality protein to support older dogs throughout their senior years. Older dogs are generally less active and therefore require less energy, which is reflected in Senior diets for small-medium breed dogs over the age of 7 years, and large-giant breeds over the age of 6 years.

Breed Specific

Large breed dogs are prone to joint problems, due to their greater weight and pressure on joints. Large breed diet formulas such as Eukanuba Large Breed Adult  food, contain products to support joint health such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate.

Breed Specific diets are available which are useful for particular problems in certain breeds. For example, Yorkshire Terriers are prone to having skin problems, so the Eukanuba Yorkshire Terrier diet contains a specific ratio of omega fatty acids, zinc and copper to maintain healthy skin and a beautiful coat. There are many other breed specific diets available.

Prescription Diets

Diet is an important factor in the treatment of many medical conditions. Your veterinarian will prescribe your pet a prescription food, if appropriate, to help with their health condition.

Such conditions include obesity, urinary tract problems, liver disease, diabetes, joint disease, skin disease, kidney disease, and digestive tract problems etc.
